Novel Studies for Grade 5/6: Bridge to Terabithia, Number the Stars ( Peace and Conflict topic)
Use “ Would you rather” or “ Darwin Awards” as writing prompts to encourage students writing, particularly boys
Use Dove commercials and Green Peace commercials for Media topic

In the spring of 2011, Arlene Low at Davidson School replaced her traditional paper and pencil final exam with a student portfolio interview instead. Here is her template script, but you really should take the time to talk to her about this creative and authentic way of assessing the ELA program!
This sample self-assessment listening template offers students a chance to reflect on their own listening skills. Originally developed for a Grade 5 classroom, this template can be modified to suit your class. You can add or remove indicators as needed. Created by Jade Ballek, 2010.
